WP4 Designing Environmental Quality into City Centre Living

Overall Vision

The project aims to investigate and understand the key environmental factors in the urban environment, and relate these to the quality of life of a number of social groups.

Environmental factors including outdoor air quality, noise pollution and indoor living conditions will be measured and monitored in a number of urban environments.  To see how these factors influence the quality of life, public perception of these issues and public health will be explored.

Implications

This research will enable the development of practical tools and resources, integrating environmental issues and social inclusion, for decision making regarding design guidelines for city development.

The research will also develop a validated database of environmental conditions in the cities investigated.

Project Duration:      2003 - 2006

Co-ordination:           The project is funded by a grant from EPSRC, and developed by the Sustainable Urban Environments Consortium.  The consortium comprises of the University of Salford, University College London, London Metropolitan University and Sheffield Hallam University together with more than 30 partner organisations.  This project is one of 10 work packages within the Vivacity 2020 project.
